Environmental Policy and Objectives |
| |
The Gray Squirrel
Mine fell into disuse and was abandoned many years ago. Vehicles
and equipment were abandoned, drums of waste material were discarded
and the area was generally trashed.
We are restoring the Gray Squirrel Mine to
profitable production, while returning the land to an environmentally
sound condition. We strongly believe that these goals are not mutually
exclusive, but that they are, in fact, inseperable. |
| |
 |
| Safety |
Our
number one objective at the Gray Squirrel Mine is the safety of
workers and visitors. Mining activities are inherently dangerous
because of the tons of ore, the moving machinery, high voltage electrical
power, and of course the mine itself.
Every precaution is being taken
at the Gray Squirrel Mine to reduce or eliminate the possibility
of injury to people or animals on the site. |
| |
|
| Energy Policy |
Concerted
efforts are being made to reduce the site's energy requirements.
Energy efficient lighting is used throughout, with intelligent switches
to reduce unnecessary consumption.
In addition, we have begun moving
equipment to the cleanest energy source possible. (For example,
the original piston air compressor at the mine burned 50 gallons
of gasoline per day. It is being replaced with an efficient electric
rotary compressor.) |
| |
|
| Toxic Chemicals |
We do not use heavy
metals (like lead or mercury), asbestos, or chlorinated hydrocarbons.
In addition, we do not burn any plastics or other materials which
can produce harmful combustion byproducts. Petrochemicals (necessary
for the lubrication and operation of machinery) are being brought
under a careful management regime, and will be disposed of properly.
Sewage produced at the site is digested in a septic system before
release into the environment. |
| |
|
| Recycling |
The Gray Squirrel Mine
is a closed system. Everything brought into the site must be hauled
out again. Therefore, we have a strong commitment to reduction, reuse
and recycling of materials. |
| |
|
| Land Use |
Because
the Gray Squirrel is situatated in a National Forest, we have a
commitment to maintain the site in such a way as to provide multiple
uses.
There
is no reason why a mine has to be ugly.
Derricks, buildings and outdoor equipment will be painted in colors
designed to blend in with the environment.
Campsites are available at
the mine which are available by reservation. The beautiful views
and abundant wildlife attest to our success at accomplishing our
environmental goals. |
